Get to know our Alumni as they describe their perspectives on the MAS ETH in Applied Technology and participanting CAS programmes. You will gain insights from multiple experts with diverse backgrounds: why they chose the MAS ETH AT programme, what were their experiences, and what they valued the most.
My role requires me to develop ideas on behalf on our clients – that are often manufacturing and industrial companies. I work daily with colleagues with a strong technical profile: engineering, mechanics, software development, electronics, and more. I felt I needed to complete my education, by getting a better understanding of the foundations of their work, to be more effective at communicating and developing projects together.
If you’re looking for complementing your knowledge and expand your understanding of how the world works, the MAS ETH in Applied Technology is the right programme. Even after completing it, I have not found any similar programme around that offers the same blend of theory and practice, and that is designed to bring us “non-technical people” onboard when it comes to technology and science. And then, as a business person, how else do you get the chance to say that you’ve studied in Einstein’s university?
The full program surely requires a certain degree of commitment, over an extended period of time. Between the 2 days in presence every two weeks and the assignments in between, it was not always easy to make it fit with all the other commitments - work, family, life in general! - especially closer to the exams when we needed to focus and consolidate our learnings. With an extra effort in terms of scheduling, though, I trust it can work for every professional!

In today’s work environment and particularly in management, I see a vital need for a cross-functional approach combining understanding of technology with an understanding of people and business. The MAS programme has helped provide a broad base for understanding technology which enables me to build stronger links with technical and commercial teams.
The programme combines the professional network aspect of an MBA with breadth and depth in technology.
It was great fun to study with a group of such motivated and experienced professionals. During the two years we bonded over joint experiences and built a lasting network based on trust and collaboration.

This MAS programme differentiates itself from other continuing education studies in the way it covers a broad range of technology topics while deep diving into the mathematical and science basics. It uniquely combines state-of-the-art academic knowledge on topics like deep learning for computer vision, cryptography, material science or electric power grids with apt practical exercises like 3D printing, assembling an electric engine or an entire CO2 sensing device, to name just a few.
I have searched for this kind of programme for a long time and there is nothing even closely comparable on the market.

Technology advances and applications today are moving at incredible speed, and senior leaders are often challenged with having to simultaneously understand and decide technology strategies.
This is a risky approach and often leads to inefficient business decisions. With the MAS AT programme, you are quickly brought up to not only “state of the art”, but challenged to understand what the business implications could be. These topics are taught by world-class faculty and you are surrounded by a cohort with broad experience and perspectives that add to the richness of the coursework. After completing the programme, your comprehension of emerging technologies and their impacts into your area of business gives you a huge advantage when leading technology-related effort. It is not uncommon to be mistaken for a data scientist or smart grid expert! In this, the programme is quite unique in the knowledge it imparts and how it sets you up for the future.

I was always driven to pursue a deeper understanding of the science and engineering principles behind the captivating technologies and products that shape our daily lives. And the MAS ETH in Applied Technology programme provided exactly the foundation I needed for my successful transition into a technology-focused career. The programme and the concept behind it are quite new and unique, by offering a comprehensive understanding of technology topics that is broad enough to span across diverse industries, but also deep enough to enable efficient collaboration with scientific researchers and engineers. It also helped me hone the skill of rapidly immersing myself in unfamiliar subjects, effectively breaking down complex technical problems into manageable components to develop impactful solutions.
A personal highlight and a truly memorable experience was the undertaking of my Master's thesis. I greatly appreciated the flexibility in selecting a topic that aligned with my personal interests, as well as the exceptionally inspiring opportunity to closely interact with a leading ETH Lab and experts.

"As a business person regularly exposed to data science work, I value how the programme provided me a “foundational” overview of data science and applied IT concepts – to supplement my otherwise self-learned (and thus with potential gaps) understanding of that landscape. I believe development of this overview has been of even greater value for those of my colleagues with less technical exposure.
However, what I valued most was how the programme introduced us, and indeed forced us, into a level of technical and theoretical detail on topics like machine learning that is far beyond what I normally encounter as a business-oriented leader."

" In my role as Head Intraday, leading a team of energy specialists, it is crucial to have a solid understanding of the current and future Energy Markets, as well as to continuously acquire new technical and analytical skills. The CAS in Applied Technology in Energy enabled me to enhance my comprehension of the complex interdependencies that exist within the energy system, as well as gain valuable insight into emerging technologies. Through a combination of online coursework, lab work and real-world projects, I was equipped with the necessary expertise to address the challenges of the evolving energy landscape. I highly recommend this programme to others seeking to deepen their knowledge in this field."

"The ETH CAS Applied Technology in Energy (CAS ATE) allowed me to deep-dive into the rapidly evolving and highly relevant topic of a Sustainable Energy Supply. Working through the theoretical aspects of the Energy System as well as hands-on case studies in collaboration with industry partners really enabled me to become an Energy Expert in just a few months time - a thing I didn’t believe was possible before.
The top-notch teachers took their time and dedication to guide us through this programme, which I can only recommend to anyone who wants to become an expert in energy (even without technical background)!"

My promotion to a role of increasing responsibility, which demands a strong technology background, would not have been achievable without the support of the MAS ETH in Applied Technology programme.
The company I work for is a world leader in engine-mounted electronic units for aircraft and I wanted to learn how these units work and how they are designed and built. I was keen in choosing this elective CAS as part of the MAS ETH AT as it starts from understanding how a semiconductor device works before developing to the design of integrated circuits and electronic systems.
I am now able to ask the right questions on technology to engineering teams and customers alike. I can also understand better the challenges of our customers and I am better prepared to support them in an industry that is open to innovative solutions while using proven technologies to maintain very high safety standards.

Electronic devices and digitization have significantly influenced and transformed the way we live, work, and communicate over the past few decades. Gaining a comprehensive understanding of these technologies including their potential and limitations, is essential across all industries, including the one I currently work in, focused on quantum computing and AI. The CAS ETH in Applied Electronics and Digitization helped me grasp the transition from the “physical” world and electrons to the “digital” world and signal processing. It was a perfect bridge connecting the learnings from two other CAS programmes that I attended as part of the MAS ETH AT.
The practical exercises, complemented by interactions based on rich backgrounds and perspectives of fellow participants were vital to solidify the understanding of sometimes highly elaborated applied concepts, such as commercial electronic sensors.

"The CAS AMT was exactly the programme I was looking for. I wanted to better understand the technical world of my daily work. With what I learned, I can now more easily understand and communicate with my technical team members. I can truly say that I use what I learned in the CAS AMT daily.
Working in product development and management, I work closely with engineers and technical professionals. I wanted to better understand our technical project tasks and reports; while also, being able to better communicate on technical topics. Therefore, I searched for a programme that could offer a technical curriculum to someone who had never studied such topics and a short timeline that could be done in parallel to a full-time, demanding job. The CAS AMT met and surpassed all my needs and expectations. The topics were exciting and well taught and the professors were engaging. I was able to learn complex technical concepts quickly and immediately apply them to my work."
