MAS in Applied Technology

The Master of Advanced Studies ETH in Applied Technology (MAS AT) provides professionals with a deeper understanding of the science and technology impacting the future of their industry. By boosting their technology based innovation skills, they will be able to take on greater leadership roles in their technology company or industry.

Representation of ETH Master in Advanced Studies in Applied Technology programme

Take a look at the presentation of Prof. Dr. Ulrike Grossner, MAS AT Programme Director, during the 27th January 2023 Information Event, to get a brief description of the concept behind the MAS ETH in Applied Technology and the 5 CAS Programmes.

The goal of the MAS ETH AT is to train experienced leaders from any professional background, whether or not technical, to understand key technologies and to work effectively with technology teams. The aim is to empower such professionals to develop and apply technology solutions to real world business problems.

The programme prepares select participants for greater responsibilities within companies by providing a specific, targeted set of knowledge and skills. Instead of the business skills typical of management programmes, the MAS ETH AT provides participants with science and technology competences that enable them to solve more complex and demanding tasks and to take on more responsibility as leaders, a kind of "reverse MBA" or "MBA in technology". Language of Instruction

English is the official language of instruction and examination for the MAS and CAS programmes.

The two-year, part-time programme is divided into two stages. The first year consists of intensive science and technology training in two mandatory areas of information and manufacturing technology plus a third technology focus area selected by the participant. The second year of the programme shifts focus from understanding specific technology to understanding the research and development (R&D) process and developing relevant innovation skills that can be applied throughout the company. More details

The MAS ETH AT has a modular structure and includes four CAS programmes (Certificate of Advanced Studies), which can also be taken individually and completed with a CAS diploma. For a Master's degree, students must complete four CAS from the MAS ETH AT programme as well as an experimental project and the Master's thesis.

Learning formats include lectures and seminars, blended online & classroom courses, interdisciplinary project work, individual self-study as well as an experimental project in the laboratory. Many courses follow a flipped classroom or blended learning concept to maximize the value obtained during the time that participants are on campus at ETH Zurich.

Similar to many business programmes, participants generally follow the MAS AT as a cohort to facilitate peer relationships and learning. The MAS ETH AT also provides a number of supplemental learning opportunities, including guest speakers with significant industry experience as well as various professional networking opportunities.
